will take place on the 22th of Marchl 2025, at CIM-FMUP - Centro de Investigação Médica da Faculdade
de Medicina da Universidade do Porto, Portugal. It will offer scientific lectures lasting from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm GMT
and Hands-on Workshops, which will start at 5.30 pm GMT.
Get ready to expand your vision on the 11th YES Talk, where we will explore the latest and most innovative advancements in Ophthalmology. Here, you will be able to learn from renowned experts in the field, such as Professor Barbara Pierscionek and Professor Pedro Antas.
Register as fast as you can on February 28th and become involved in the YES Talks’ experience!
Professor Barbara Pierscionek has expertise in biochemistry, optics and biomechanics of the eye lens and applies these skills to study how the proteins in the lens change with development, ageing and cataract formation.
The research Professor Pierscionek leads is on the structure/function relationship in the eye lens, the developmental optics of the eye, the optical and biomechanical changes with age and refractive error, design of intraocular implants, development of non-surgical treatment of cataract and applications of nanotechnology to eye research.
Professor Pierscionek also has qualifications in law and has published on data protection and ethico-legal issues in technology. Professor Pierscionek has over 190 publications and her research has been supported by industry, the EU and research councils.
Pedro Antas is a medical doctor and researcher specializing in cell and molecular biology. He earned his PhD in 2017 from University College London and The Francis Crick Institute, where he investigated novel Wnt regulators in colorectal cancer.
His postdoctoral research at The Francis Crick Institute and Nova Medical School de Lisboa expanded his expertise in cell death mechanisms, cellular signalling pathways, ocular diseases, and gene therapy.
Beyond his research, Dr Antas served as a science policy advisor at The Royal Society, providing expert input on scientific matters to policymakers. In addition to his medical practice, he works as an Associate Researcher at the Champalimaud Foundation, contributing to pioneering research on gene-editing therapies for ocular diseases. Dr. Antas has published in leading scientific journals and received prestigious awards, including the Throssell and Hillier Families Research Award from the Choroideremia Research Foundation.
His work continues to advance understanding in stem cell biology and molecular medicine.
