      Description:
      In a world where access to psychoactive substances is becoming easier, it is important to understand the pharmacological, psychiatric and social effects of these drugs. In this workshop, guided by a Forensic Specialist, you will have the opportunity to see real cases of drug abusers and discuss its adverse effects.

      • RICARDO JORGE DINIS-OLIVEIRA, PharmaD, PhD, European PhD, DSc
        • Toxicologist and Forensic Sciences Expert. He developed scientific and academic activity in the areas of Toxicology and Pharmacology of Psychoactive Substances, Pesticides, and Medicines, in their preclinical, clinical, and forensic aspects. He has supervised several Integrated Master’s dissertations, Master’s dissertations, and PhD theses. He is a member of the Editorial Board and Ambassador of several International Scientific Journals. He is the author of more than 220 articles published (representing more than 5500 citations) in internationally indexed journals, with peer review. He authorizes about 40 book chapters, four books, and four national and three international patents. He is the author of Guidelines in Forensic Sciences for Clinical and Forensic Toxicological samples collection, with an international scope. He has received recognition for his Pedagogical Excellence in Higher Education, which resulted in international scientific publications. Furthermore, he coordinated the Self-Assessment Commissions for various accreditation processes of the new or in-operation Cycle of Studies by the Higher Education Accreditation Agency (A3ES) and has been an A3ES expert since 2019. He is a Full Professor at the University Institute of Health Sciences and of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. He is the Director of the Research Unit 1H-TOXRUN – One Health Toxicology Research Unit of IUCS-CESPU and integrated researcher and Director of the Research Group in Toxicology of UCIBIO - Research Unit on Applied Molecular Biosciences. In 2021, 2022, and 2023, he integrated the World’s Top 2% Scientist list, which ranks the most highly cited scientists. He is the founder and current President of the Portuguese Association of Forensic Sciences (APCF) and was Vice-president of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Abuse and Neglect (SPECAN). He is a Scientific Consultant for the pharmaceutical development companies Avextra Pharma GmbH and Albert Labs, and he is the Technical-Scientific Director of the Center of Forensic Expertise FOREN.pt. Integrates since 2024, a list of experts of the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA) for the risk assessment of new psychoactive substances (Author ID: 9e5c539d-042d-465b-b9d1-348ee21b1d57). He was the Director of Medical Writing at MTG Research. SCOPUS states his current h index is 40 (Author ID: 14053913800).

      Stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability and it’s consequences such as spasticity should be accurately diagnosed and treated. In this workshop , participants will have the chance to diagnose post stroke spasticity (a sequel that occurs in 38% of strokes) and watch the administration of botulinum toxin with the help of echography.

      Epileptic seizures result from excessive, hypersynchronized discharges of neuronal networks. Manifestations are diverse and range from simple (e.g. clonic jerking of a limb) to very complex (e.g. epileptic “déjà vu” or loss of awareness). By recording simultaneous video and EEG, the correlation between semiology and electrical activity of the brain can be assembled into a coherent electroclinical picture. In these case-based workshops, you will be able to learn about the semiology of epileptic seizures as a powerful clinical tool and a window into functional neuroanatomy.

      While physicians and nurses work hard to save patients’ lives, a great number of people are operating behind the scenes ensuring health care operations and logistics run smoothly. In this workshop we will look at some of the most critical problems health care units face, such as emergency ward layout design, patient flow problems, capacity and staff planning, as well as some of the best responses academics and practitioners have found to address these issues. Furthermore, we’ll have a glimpse at how human resources for health, in particular physicians and nurses, will evolve in the future at a national scale.

        • Mário Amorim Lopes is an assistant professor at Universidade do Porto, an invited teaching assistant at Católica Porto Business School and a senior researcher at INESC-TEC. He holds a MSc in Software Engineering, a MSc in Economics and a PhD in the field of Health Economics from University of Porto (cum laude). His research is on healthcare, in particular in healthcare workforce planning, health economics, health care management science and health policy. He participated in the European project JA on Healthcare Workforce Planning and Forecasting as an expert, and is currently a core member of the COST Action project RANCARE “Missed nursing care”. He is the project leader/manager for several R&D and consultancy projects with leading healthcare institutions, such as ACSS, Ordem dos Enfermeiros, CHVNG or Glintt. He is also a member of Associação Portuguesa de Economia da Saúde (APES), a member of Associação Portuguesa da Investigação Operacional (APDIO) and a former member of the Health Parliament Portugal. Finally, he is an essayist for the newspaper Observador, where he writes monthly essays on topics related to healthcare.

      In this Workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore and deepen their knowledge of Travel Medicine, through the analysis of case studies. These cases will cover issues such as vector-borne diseases, vaccination, gastrointestinal diseases, exposure to extreme weather conditions and medical emergencies while traveling. Participants will be encouraged to analyze various scenarios and discuss best practices for preventing and treating common health problems in travelers. The main objective of this Workshop will be empower participants to provide accurate guidance and care quality to travelers, helping to ensure a safe and healthy experience during their journeys around the world.
